Professor the Lord Kakkar, BSc, MBBS, PhD, FRCS, FRCPE, is Professor of Surgery, University College London; Chairman of University College London Partners Academic Health Science Partnership; and President of the Thrombosis Research Institute, London, UK. He completed his medical degree at King’s College Hospital Medical School and received his PhD from Imperial College London. His research interests are in the prevention and treatment of venous and arterial thrombosis. His most recent awards include James IV Association of Surgeons Travelling Fellow (2006) and Welcome Memorial Lecture (Royal Society of Medicine, 2009). Lord Kakkar was created a Life Peer in 2010 and sits on the cross benches of the House of Lords. He is Chairman of the House of Lords Appointments Commission and UK Business Ambassador for Healthcare and Life Sciences.
