Samuel Z Goldhaber, MD, is Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and a senior staff member of the Cardiovascular Medicine Division at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), Boston, USA. He is Director of the BWH Thrombosis Research Group. He serves as Principal Investigator on a broad range of studies related to the prevention, treatment, and epidemiology of venous thromboembolism (VTE), atrial fibrillation-related stroke, and acute coronary syndromes. He is Chair of the Steering Committee of the NIH-sponsored ATTRACT Trial on acute iliofemoral deep vein thrombosis, and serves on the Steering Committees of GARFIELD-AF and GARFIELD-VTE. He runs a 5000-patient atrial fibrillation study at BWH.

Professor Goldhaber has received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Surgeon General of the United States for his work on the prevention of VTE. He serves on the editorial boards of the European Heart Journal and Circulation and is Circulation’s Section Editor for Clinician Update and the Cardiology Patient page. Professor Goldhaber is also President of the North American Thrombosis Forum (www.NATFonline.org), a non-profit organisation that promotes advocacy and that develops educational programmes for clinicians and the public on pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis, atrial fibrillation-related stroke, and acute coronary syndromes.
